Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] North County Dredging
I know that for many of you, northern San Diego county feels like
the frontier, but for those of you who may be interested, there are
dredging projects occurring in Carlsbad and Oceanside. Large floating
barges suck up sand and slurry and pump the spoils to locations along the
beach in large pipes which are periodically moved to replenish beach sand.
The resulting effluent attracts large flocks of gulls and terns and are
worth checking for interesting birds. Currently, the Carlsbad project is
dumping spoils on the beach in front of the power plant, south of
Tamarack State Beach. While my visits have not produced anything exciting
so far, it's worth checking if you are in the area.

Good birding,

Rick Grove
Oceanside

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://bvaudubon.org/birding-resources/ .
