Jane and I got out after the fog lifted and were treated to a nice
morning flight of migrating birds moving north over the Hampton harbor
inlet. We counted only birds that we believed to be migrating. In just
a little over 4 hour we counted:
Hampton Beach SP, Rockingham, New Hampshire, US
Apr 23, 2025 8:12 AM - 12:30 PM
Protocol: Stationary
22 species (+2 other taxa)
Mourning Dove 9 Nine counted moving north over the river. 1
counted moving SOUTH. Difficult species to gauge actual migration.
Lesser/Greater Yellowlegs 11 Single flock moving north. Probably
Greaters.
Common Loon 1 Very high fly flying loon moving north way inland.
Double-crested Cormorant 37
Glossy Ibis 7 Single flock moving north.
Great Blue Heron 2
Turkey Vulture 1 One seemed to be moving. Largest group of 10
seemed to just circle to the south. Hard to estimate migrating birds.
As usual.
Osprey 2 Migrating. More locals present including local male
giving display flight.
Sharp-shinned Hawk 1
Northern Harrier 3 Including one sky high bird moving north overhead.
Bald Eagle 3 Three believed to be migrating. At least 2 others
believed to be locals.
Red-tailed Hawk 1
Northern Flicker 3 Nice to see a few flickers migrating north.
American Kestrel 37 Another decent Kestrel flight.
Merlin 8 Good number of migrating Merlins. My high spring count is
12 on 4/17/11.
crow sp. 16 Singles and small flocks moving north. Silent.
Tree Swallow 407 My highest spring count of migrating birds is
1,481 on 4/15/22.
Northern Rough-winged Swallow 5
Barn Swallow 18 Not many, but peak counts generally occur in the
last of April to early May.
American Robin 1
American Goldfinch 18
Red-winged Blackbird 8
Brown-headed Cowbird 16
Common Grackle 59
