I birded the one mile loop trail at Shannon Valley OSP this morning.
Starting at the trailhead at the west end of Mountain Laurel Lane my
only BLACK HEADED GROSBEAK was heard. Climbing the switchback I heard a
HOUSE WREN and saw two LAZULI BUNTINGS. Another bunting sang near the
top of the hill where I also had BLUE GRAY GNATCATCHER'S and an ASH
THROATED FLYCATCHER.
The WHITE TAILED KITES have relocated from the ridge to the south side
of the trail. Along the open trail through the grass were three heard
only LAZULI BUNTINGS singing from the hillside. Further east I saw two
more buntings closer to the trail but failed to get a photo.Swallows and
Swifts soared overhead.
The trail along Hicks was difficult to bird due to tree trimming. I
heard two more ASH THROATED FLYCATCHERS another HOUSE WREN and a single
WARBLING VIREO from the paved trail. DOWNY WOODPECKERS and HOODED
ORIOLES were near Shannon Road. CAL. QUAIL pair were seen in many
locations but Cal. Thrashers were quiet today.
