Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] A Swallow-tailed Kite may be on its way to San Diego
Dear friends,
Hiram Moreno of Ensenada just informed me that he photographed a Swallow-tailed Kite circling over the university there on Wednesday 22 April. Given the Swallow-tailed Kite's history of being seen in multiple widely separated locations over multiple days, I thought it might be worth alerting San Diego observers that this bird could be on its way north.
Also, on Sunday 20 April, I saw a Steller's Jay at the south end of Hill Valley in southeastern San Diego Co., right at the corner of Live Oak Springs Rd. and Hwy. 94. Though this is only two miles east of Clover Flat, the southernmost point known to me where Cyanocitta stelleri frontalis (possibly just a single pair) is resident, it's still a surprise, at least to me. Steller's Jay is absent from Baja California, less than 7 miles to the south. I guess I should respond to Hiram by suggesting that Baja's birders look in any oak woodland on their side of the border.
Good birding,
Philip UnittSan Diego

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://bvaudubon.org/birding-resources/ .
