Today seven birders toured some of the wetlands west of Sioux Falls in Minnehaha County. We saw over 65 species and quite a few first-of-year species. At one of our first stops, Buffalo Lake on 245th St in the far northwestern corner of the county, we were treated to two Cinnamon Teal males amongst a handful of other duck species and three Black-crowned Night Herons.
Throughout the day we encountered nine shorebird species including Long-billed Dowitchers, Wilson's Phalaropes, both Yellowlegs, Willet, Semipalmated Plover, Spotted and Baird's Sandpipers. Swainson's Hawks were observed in several places hunting plowed fields. We also found several sparrow species including Lincoln's, Song, Swamp, Vesper, and Lark Sparrows.
Thanks to everyone who attended and made it a really enjoyable morning. Our next Sioux Falls Bird Club outing will be Saturday, May 10 to Newton Hills State Park.
