Birding was still slow this morning. I observed 29 species on my morning river walk in Burcham and a few more on a quick drive-by of Clinton & Lone Star Lake Areas.
Many of the flocked-up Female Red-winged Blackbirds moved northward to find mates and thousands of Tree Swallows I observed and heard yesterday have also moved northward. A few Trees and Northern Rough-winged swallows were present today.
However, Cliff Swallows have returned to the Mass Street Bridge. I also observed a FOS Chimney Swift on the south side of the park . And when I got in my car ready to exit the park, I observed a Forster's Tern flying northward over the Kaw. Saw my first Coopers Hawk this season at Burcham. Also, heard 3 Brown Thrashers calling. Twenty-five or more Turkey Vultures were at their roost near second bridge, likely hoping for a pause in the rain to dry their wings.
After leaving Burcham, I saw about 20 White Pelicans at the east side of Clinton. Also, saw my FOS Red-headed Woodpecker at Chicken Creek, and heard a FOS Louisiana Waterthrush near one of the small Brooks that runs into Lone Star Lake.
I stopped at every lightly traveled bridge to listen for the Northern Parula and many other places to listen for Yellow-rumps and other early warblers and did not find any (or any other of the usual migrants for this time of year). Hope the south wind and sunny sky tomorrow brings in migrants.
