Yesterday, Cricket and I did some birding around Gilroy. First unloaded our bikes along Cañada Road to ride to the end of Jamieson Road. The morning was cool and slightly overcast but we had many spring birds including Western Kingbird, Bullock’s Oriole, Black-headed Grosbeak, and Western Flycatcher. Most exciting was a high count of at least 16 LAWRENCE’S GOLDFINCHES. We ran into Rick Herder who was doing a survey and he reported finding even more in the restricted area. In light of all the reports of this species from Ed Levin, Grant Park and elsewhere, it seems this is an especially good year for the bird.
We also stopped at Hunting Hollow and again unloaded the bikes to ride Gilroy Hot Springs Road to the bridge. We had Cassin’s Vireo, Orange-crowned and Wilson’s Warblers, as well as at last 6 BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLERS from about halfway to the bridge and at the bridge. We also found Common Mergansers in the creek below the road.
Hiking along Hunting Hollow Road (trail) we first heard and then saw a PILEATED WOODPECKER.
