A north wind on the Kaw early this morning. The birding was slow.
I heard a single White-throated Sparrow - their sweet song is sign of spring. Thousands of Tree Sparrows flew low over the Kaw from the parking lot to the south end of the park - saw about a hundred them resting on a single dead tree hanging over the river. Some were in dull brown plumage. A few Rough-winged Swallows were mixed in but I did not hear their vocalizations, which were common yesterday morning. The Cliff Swallow colony still has not returned to the Mass Bridge.
Female Red-winged Blackbirds were flocked up and very noisy all along the river trail wood-edge - their numbers have increased. The north winds must be holding tack their northward migration. Heard one Warbling Vireo and saw a single Yellow-rumped Warble. Also, heard a Brown Thrasher and a single Fish Crow. Heard a Hairy Woodpecker - first of the season in Burcham.
