Hello All, This is a reminder that the Barnes and Agency Restoration update is tonight at the KBAS general meeting, Favell Museum, April 9, 6:30, in the lower meeting room.See the notice below for more information. Kevin Spencer The Barnes and Agency Restoration Project, by FWS staff April 9, 2025 Favell Museum, Klamath Falls 6:30 pmThe Upper Klamath National Wildlife Refuge "Barnes and Agency Tract" is one of the largest freshwater wetland restorations in the United States. Reaching this restoration milestone has been the result of over two decades of collaborative communication and planning focused on the enhancement of vital wetland systems that are essential to ecosystem functions of the Klamath Watershed. Refuge staff will provide a summary of the planning history of this project, information on early design concepts, and walk you through the restoration actions that culminated in the reconnection of historical delta habitat to Upper Klamath Lake. The Barnes and Agency project was an important step towards watershed water quality and quantity improvement. However, in the context of broader watershed needs just one small piece of the puzzle. The Barnes Agency restoration cannot be looked at as a singular success rather additive to other numerous watershed efforts including dam removal, Sprague and Williamson River restoration, increased security of wetlands at Lower Klamath and Tule Lake NWR's and thousands of acres of upland rehabilitation happening across a fire scarred system. All valuable independently but together move the watershed towards increased resiliency for people, fish, and wildlife.
