Hi all,
Just a brief report on the status of the Purple Martin colony at CT Audubon’s Milford Point Coastal Center.
At our last nest check on Friday, 6/27, we had 43 active nests, with a total of 129 eggs and 59 chicks. That’s about on par with last year’s excellent nesting season. Well, just today 4 eggs are hatching in gourd # 25. That gourd has a brand new video camera installed, so you can watch the tiny chicks and parents anytime at this link:
A few gourds are still available for “adoption”, which is how we raise money to fund this important monitoring project at one of the largest colonies in Connecticut. For more info, call Louise Crocco at The Coastal Center, 203-878-7440, ext 502.

I just got this message from my neighbors:
Any suggestions? Many thanks.
Dear Neighbors
We wanted to ask if anyone has skills with birds. Yesterday, during the heavy pruning, a branch was taken down in front of our home and a bird’s nest came down. Three young birds were left on the side of the road.
We have been trying to help them, awaiting the mother’s return. We have also called 4 different Animal Control and Humane Society rescue units, but to no avail. We alerted the Fire Department as well.
If anyone has animal rescue skills, please will you come to the front of our driveway and help. We would love to support these little birds.
Thanks
Mark and Emily

Hi Jeri -
I agree with Chris, especially since I watched a Great Blue Heron feasting on voles at Bauer Farm in Madison several times last Fall. See my eBird checklist for photos: https://ebird.org/checklist/S200204806 (caution: not for the faint of heart).
Amazing to watch; but not for the voles!

Good morning, My neighbor just texted me that there is Great Blue Heron in the back yard. It is just walking around . This is a condo complex in Niantic. We both live close to a marsh, not sure why it is hanging out in the yard. I am not sure if it is injured as I am at work in New Haven. Any idea why it would stay in a yard? Jeri Duefrene, Niantic

We had one in our yard once; it just hung around for a while and then took off. We live near a stream, so we figured it was just checking out the neighborhood. My only concern would be if it is injured and there are dogs, etc. that could get to it.

Globally, pollinators are in decline with ramifications for both human-dominated and natural landscapes. The key factors driving these declines include a combination of habitat loss, disease, climate change, and pesticides. This talk narrows in on threats posed by pesticides, notably neonicotinoids. Introduced in the 1990s, neonicotinoids are now the most widely used insecticides in the world. A primary factor contributing to bee, butterfly, and aquatic invertebrate declines, neonicotinoids are now pervasive in our waterways and soils. We will discuss how and where neonicotinoids are used, and their impacts to bees and other wildlife. The presentation will end with solutions that range from individual action to policy change.
Dr. Mia Park is an Integrated Pest and Pollinator Management (IPPM) Specialist at the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, where she promotes systems-based approach to minimize risk of pesticides to pollinators and other beneficial insects.

Hi Tina,
The inland colonies had a delayed start due to the weather this spring but
activity is picking up now! 668 eggs just in the Kent colonies so far and
34 young! Waiting on reports from five other colonies in or near Kent.
The McKeon Farm in Ridgefield just reported another 195 eggs!
At least six pairs now breeding at the Little Pond Boardwalk at White
Memorial Conservation area.
A sub-adult male color banded at Lake Waramaug State Park last summer was
just photographed and reported from the Hop Meadow Country Club in
Simsbury, CT.

This year our Purple Martin colony has 35 active nests out of 36 gourds, almost full capacity. As of this morning we have 159 eggs and 6 brand new hatchlings. This is our best year ever for egg totals and nest totals. We have not been able to get beyond 22-24 nests in past years. Our martins did not use the gourds with crescent shaped openings. This past winter we “revised” the 12 crescent shaped openings to circular openings and removed the outer “porches”. This change seems to have made all the difference.
I’m wondering how the other colonies around the state are doing this year.
And thank you Miley Bull for helping me start this colony with 24 gourds and to COA for giving the Friends of Sherwood Island grant money many years ago for 12 more gourds and the pole to add to the original 24 gourds that started our journey with these amazing birds.

I was greeted in the parking lot by a very vocal Mockingbird and Song sparrow. Yesterday DeWitt Allen found a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station at Lockwood Farm in Hamden. The property is closed to the public on weekends and DeWitt has permission for limited access, only for the summer bird count. He made the decision to not report the bird to our community since birders would not be able to access the fenced property, there is no parking outside the fence, and there was no way to see the bird from the road. The onslaught of excited birders would not be compatible in this situation. This may frustrating for some, but DeWitt did the right thing to help preserve access necessary for the summer bird counts and maintain the relationship between the CAES and birders. The property is open during the week and this morning about 10 birders searched for a couple of hours, but it has not been relocated. Although it appears to have moved on, it’s possible that the bird may return! Those wishing to try for it can visit M-F during business hours and we have been asked to park at the following coordinates: [1]41.407380,-72.903346 The property is beautiful and you may bird it, thanks to people like Dewitt who do the right thing as a member of our birding community! I mention this because he was in Alaska recently doing research when tragically the helicopter he was in crashed and he was killed. I just thought that he deserved recognition for giving his life in the cause for bird and wildlife conservation. May he rest in peace.

Colorful day today in Woodbridge behind the JCC on the power-line cut. The Prairie Warbler that has been alluding me for the past two weeks was finally spotted! Had 2 actually. There was also a continuing Blue-winged Warbler and a Common Yellowthroat. Switching colors, also relocated the Indigo Bunting. I also heard a continuing Scarlet Tanager. Last week there were two visible and singing. Also thought I heard an Eastern Wood Pewee. But did not see it so did not add it to my checklist. It’s a great little spot!

Just saw a very odd-looking blue-winged warbler at Gavel Family Farm preserve in Roxbury. It sang the distinctive blue-winged warbler song, and it looked like a blue warbler, except that it had a black throat. Does anyone know what I may have seen? Was this some type of hybrid?

We need to keep in mind that the main Aurora arrived much earlier than predicted, around sunrise time here. There is still hope that tonight just after dark will produce a display but it’s not a given that it will be bright if it shows here at all. Right now the indicators aren’t great.

It's not about birds, but about a truly amazing natural spectacle. Delete if not interested.
There's been a LOT of geomagnetic activity on the Sun - a G4 storm - so there is a high likelihood of seeing the Northern lights much further south than CT tonight and Monday night. The best time/way to see them is to get to a dark area away from light pollution close after sunset when the sky is dark, look to the north, and use a long exposure on your camera or use your phone to record all the colors. We may have some clouds on Sunday night but Monday is predicted to be clear with fabulous viewing. Fingers crossed for some amazing views!
It is absolutely worthwhile to drive to a dark area to see this when it gets dark -- really, they are amazing! Watch with your phones! With the naked eye you may see colors or just a hazy green "fog", but the cameras should pick up all the colors and motion of the aurora.
