Subject: [CT Birds] CT Tricolored Heron and Black Skimmer
5/9. I just learned of two sightings, belatedly:

Tricolored Heron - 5/4 one well-photographed by Mark Grogan, perched on a branch at McKinney NWR “warehouse pond”. Photos o. His Flickr site.
On 5/6, Stefan Martin, Matt Joyce and I saw one (no doubt same bird) fly SSW over Milford Point sandbar.

Black Skimmer - 4/25 - Milan Bull told me he saw one over the Housatonic River, while he was fishing off the tip of Milford (Smith’s) Point.

A beautiful breeding plumaged Common Loon being seen right now (11:00 am) at Turtle Pond, Ridgefield, CT.  This is a small pond, so there are dynamite, close in, don't have to leave the car, views right next to the road across from 124 Old Sib Road.  The loon is also belting out its yodel call.   This is the first time I have ever encountered a loon on this small pond.  If this loon doesn't stick around at Turtle Pond, it may move over to the nearby, much larger and much more likely Lake Mamanasco.

Subject: [CT Birds] Re: North Granby -- unusual plumage on a Hairy Woodpecker
John – years ago I saw exactly the same look on a Hairy on a Marsh Trail walk in North Haven and I later asked Jim Zip (from The Fat Robin), if I possibly saw a YB Sapsucker or Three-Toed WP. He chuckled and told me that most likely the sighting was a Hairy who had been feeding or living in a tree cavity that was coated inside with a yellowish fungi. He had also (along with others he knew) had observed that very same sighting. They then all referred to it as a “Dirty Hairy” syndrome.

That’s from the experts. Too funny

At one of our feeders just now, I saw an odd-looking male Hairy Woodpecker. Its entire underparts, the sides of its neck and to some extent even its supercilium — all areas that are normally snowy white — exhibited a yellowish wash almost as vivid as that of a sapsucker. I have seen dingy-looking Hairies out West and in Central America, but that was not what I saw here; the tint was definitely yellowish, not brownish or grayish.

Has anyone seen this before or read about it?

I'm curious of what you all think is the best hanging plant for
hummingbirds. The yard has many natives (and non-natives) for the
hummingbirds, 3 feeders are hanging (in an attempt to reduce conflicts) so
this plant's merely a supplement and it's primary job is to look good on
our deck but I also want hummingbirds to use it. We tend toward a fuchsia

We tend toward a fuchsia
and have done mixed plants. What's your favorite?

Thanks,
Rob Ballinger - Clinton

> 4/30 - There have been an extraordinary number of early-arriving warblers in CT this spring. To date (4/30), an amazing 30 species of warblers have already been reported this year in the state. That’s simply amazing!
> It would appear global warming is a big factor. Considering the phenology of plants budding out, trees and shrubs are at least two weeks early in flowering and leafing out. As an example, our Shadbush would typically start blooming the first week of May. Well it’s done flowering already. Oaks are already in full flower.

Subject: [CT Birds] Turkey Season 4/30-5/31

If you bird in any places where hunting is permitted, a friendly reminder
that turkey season starts tomorrow. I reviewed the DEEP safety guidelines
and selected a few recommendations that we, as birders, might also find
useful to follow.

Never stalk turkeys or turkey calls. (Hunters are calling turkeys and you
may be calling in a hunter or walking into a hunter's calls.)

Never move, wave, or make turkey sounds to alert another hunter of your
presence. Your movements and noises may lead hunters to mistake you for a
turkey. When another hunter approaches, stay still and yell out "hunter over
here". (in our case, 'birder')

Do NOT wear red, white, blue, or black while turkey hunting. These colors
are found on the heads of gobblers and both toms and hens have black-colored
bodies. It is best to wear a fluorescent orange vest while walking in and
out of the woods and carry your harvested bird out of the field in a
fluorescent orange carrier.

Turkey hunters are not required to wear hunter orange so don't rely on this
for spotting one.

The Neotropics boasts of about 3,751 bird species which makes it the most biodiverse region in the world. This represents 90 families, 28 of which are endemic to this region. It spans over the Americas and the Caribbean with its richest diversity found in Central and South America. There is one Caribbean Island that have been a well-kept secret which rivals its mainland counterpart’s diversity, and it is Trinidad & Tobago. Trinidad being just about 50 x 39 miles and Tobago 25 x 5 miles (totaling 1,981 square miles), combined they boast of about 489 bird species representing 74 different families.
Sir Gerard Ramsawak will be talking about this rich diversity of neotropical birds, its accessibility and the rich flora and fauna of this twin island state to support it. He will highlight some of the sought after species and what makes them so unique. He will also talk about the logistics of Trinidad and Tobago as bird watching destinations, featuring some of the best birding spots.

Just looking out on to the part of the outer porch here, that is not enclosed, and noted a Barn Swallow looking for a nesting spot. My 6 "bear prove" nesting boxes in the big field below the house here are all occupied by Tree Swallows. Plan to get two more nesting boxes with "bear prove: poles up in another section of the big field below the house here that hopefully my local Eastern Bluebirds will use.

Subject: [CT Birds] The Neonicotinoid Bill is in trouble
Thank you to all the COA and CBA members that have been following and acting to get HB6916 and now SB9 passed in Hartford this Session. SB9 is a bigger Bill that combined HB6916 and others.

The pesticide industry is swaying our State Legislators to change the language in SB9. The current language in SB9 shows meaningful steps to protect pollinators and birds, our waters, our environment and healthier communities and major compromises have already been made to get SB9 passed, such as removal of all agricultural uses, neonic treated seeds and nursery applications that were in the original HB6919.

These powerful pesticide lobbyists are now pushing to remove ornamental landscaping/gardens, golf course shrubs and trees, office complexes, residences, etc. from SB9 and pushing to add a provision that allows exceptions to the 15 year ban on pesticides on K-8 school grounds for the systemic insecticide chloraniliprole. This 15 year has been one of the strongest in the Nation protecting our children from pesticides.

PLEASE REACH OUT TO YOUR LEGISLATORS ASAP AND SHARE YOUR STRONG OPPOSITION TO ANY CHANGES IN THE CURRENT LANGUAGE IN SB9. You can find your Legislators here at: https://www.cga.ct.gov/asp/menu/cgafindleg.asp

For more info on SB9 and protecting our birds and insects, our children and our precious environment, please go to the CT Pesticide Reform website (CTPesticideReform.org). Please also use your socials to get this message and the work of CPR out to your networks.

1 male arrived on April 19th, 6 days earlier than ever. A second arrived
yesterday and they've been fighting constantly. We put up 2 additional
feeders, but only the female that arrived today is smart enough to just go
to the feeder in the front rather than fight over the one in the back.

Other birds of note are blue-gray gnatcatcher and a white-throated
sparrow. White-breasted nuthatches, chickadees and tufted titmice appear
to be nesting and the bluebirds are likely on eggs as they've had a nest
for some time now.

*Volunteers needed for Grasshopper Sparrow Habitat Management at Robert’s
Field, Bristol*

*(near the corner of Perkins St. and Pinehurst Rd.)*

*Sunday, April 27th** from 10 AM to 1:00 PM*

Grasshopper Sparrows are listed on Connecticut's Endangered
Species List as Endangered due to their requirement for sparse grassland
habitat. The habitat at Roberts Field has the right conditions, and
Grasshopper Sparrows have been successfully nesting there for many years.
However, the number of nesting Grasshopper Sparrows is declining as
favorable habitat is being overrun with invasive species. A
previousTerritory Mapping Project, funded by a minigrant from the
Connecticut Ornithological Association (COA), revealed that there is
additional area that can be used as nesting territories at the site. The
Bristol Parks and Recreation Department, with the assistance of the
Environmental Learning Centers of CT (ELCCT) is in support of managing the
fields for Grasshopper Sparrows. We plan on having areas periodically
mowed to preserve the habitat, but we would like to hold an invasive
species removal work day to remove the clumps of stems and roots to prevent
resprouting.

We are planning on having this work day on Sunday, April 27th from 10
AM to 1 PM. Work gloves and any hand tools used to pull
weedy vegetation would be helpful. Sunscreen and tick protection should
also be considered. If you know other people who may be willing to help,
please spread the word and have them contact me as well. If you can help
us that morning, please let me know so we can get an idea of how many
people will be available to help. Please contact me at <jswattbirds...>
.

Thank you very much for your consideration and hopefully we can keep the
sparrows breeding there for years to come.

Subject: [CT Birds] Last Day to Register for COA Workshop on April 26
Hi All!\
\
Last call for the Connecticut Ornithological Association’s Aerial Insectivores Workshop held at the Scranton Memorial Library in Madison, CT this Saturday, April 26th!

Our very own Joe Attwater, who is a CT native and the Conservation & Education Coordinator for the Connecticut Audubon Society’s Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center in Old Lyme, has put together a great presentation that covers some of the common and rare species that we might see this migration season. This workshop is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Joe will go over key terminology, specific common species, the occasional rare ones we see, and what makes this group one of interest. We’ll be focusing on Swifts, Swallows, Flycatchers, and Nightjars, but Joe will also highlight some of the other species that occasionally feed “on the wing”.

The presentation begins at 10AM in the Community Room of the Scranton Memorial Library in Madison, Connecticut. We will have light snacks and a break for lunch (not provided). The break will also give you the opportunity to visit the nearby Audubon Shop as well. The field portion is planned to take 1.5 hours, but you are welcome to stay and bird for longer.

After the break, we’ll reconvene at Hammonasset Beach State Park where we’ll break into groups and search for Aerial Insectivores in the field. Please note, this field-trip is not required for participation in the presentation at the library.

Registration is required by the end of April 23rd. Please email <workshops...> to confirm your spot. Or visit www.ctbirding.org for more info.

Happy Birding!

Subject: [CT Birds] Bluff Point Site Plan summary now available / open for comments
Good afternoon folks,

For those who frequently bird or visit Bluff Point State Park in Groton, I
wanted to share an email from the Connecticut National Estuarine Research
Reserve about their improvement plans for the three state-owned properties
that comprise Bluff Point.

What stuck out the most from the Project Summary Report (linked below) are
the proposed park entrance and parking lot relocations. The options appear
to drastically impact the Hot Corner and connected trails, with proposed
entrance Location A being the most destructive to the Hot Corner and the
general migration fall out area.

While it was nice to see birds mentioned in the Introduction (*"**More than
200 bird species are found on Bluff Point, **including various herons,
hawks, cormorants, and federally threatened piping plover.**"*) the report
seems to ignore the impact on the birds that rely on this wooded stretch of
land and its importance during migration. And although birding shared the
top spot with mountain biking as the most frequent forms of recreation
within the park, the community commentary also lacks consideration for our
avian friends.

If you feel so inclined, please submit any comments on the report proposals
via the link below. The comment form also allows you to enter your email if
you would like to receive updates about the project. The comment period
closes May 31st.

Final Project Report for future planning purposes.

This project, funded by the Long Island Sound Futures Fund
<https://www.nfwf.org/programs/long-island-sound-futures-fund>, identified
vulnerable areas at the Bluff Point Property and collected visitor input
about use, improvements, and areas that should be protected. The summary
provides strategies to improve these areas and also includes a description
of additional priorities and input from public meetings.

The highest priorities identified for restoration are:

- The main vehicular entrance that floods daily and prevents access to
the park and causes safety concerns;
- Undersized and degraded culverts that cause trails to flood and
restrict tidal flow to wetlands;
- and the lower parking lot that floods daily.

Our next steps are to continue to work closely with CT DEEP to develop a
management strategy for the Property and apply for funds to implement the
improvements identified. If you have additional ideas or input to
contribute or would like to learn more about the project, please email
<BluffPoint...> Otherwise, we will send updates as they are available.

Thank you again for your contribution and interest!

Finally one appeared but I kept hoping for more and it took a while but eventually they came nd kept coming until the last one flew by at 3:39. Some came in singles or a few together but also in kettles of about 25 birds. In all there were approximately 143 birds involved. Also seen were1 Black Vulture, several probably migrating Turkey Vultures, 1 Osprey, 3 Bald Eagles, 3 Sharp Shinned Hawks, 1 Cooper’s Hawk, 1 Red Shouldered Hawk, 2 Red Tailed Hawks and 3 American Kestrels.

From Steve Spector, 4 Black Scoters (two pairs) present still after 7 days, at Merwin Point, Milford. In close, they are quite vocal, and their famously plaintive calls are a treat to hear. Usually in water near Beach Ave and Village Street.

Subject: [CT Birds] A banded Brant
In the category of always seeing something interesting any time you go out: I stopped by Bradley Point Park in West Haven this morning and saw a large flock of Brant feeding on the grass by the parking lot (driven there by the high tide and storm, no doubt). I looked through them (hoping to see a Black Brant) and saw a bird with bands on its legs. I was able to read the bands and have reported the sighting to the US Geological Service. I am hoping for a response. It will be interesting to find out where and when this bird was banded!

Subject: [CT Birds] COA Workshop 4/6 - Aerial Insectivores
The Connecticut Ornithological Association’s Workshop Committee is excited to invite you to our upcoming event!\
\
Join us for a \*FREE\* in-person workshop to learn more about Aerial Insectivores, specifically those that we can find here in Connecticut. This event is open to the public - all are welcome\
\
The presentation will be led by COA Board Member, Joe Attwater. Joe is a Connecticut native and the Conservation & Education Coordinator for the Connecticut Audubon Society’s Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center in Old Lyme.

The presentation will go over key terminology, specific common species, the occasional rare ones we see, and what makes this group one of interest.

After the break, we’ll reconvene at Hammonasset Beach State Park where we’ll break into groups and search for Aerial Insectivores in the field. The field portion is planned to take 1.5 hours, but you are welcome to stay and bird for longer. Please note, this field-trip is not required for participation in the presentation at the library.

Space is limited, so preregistration is required by April 23rd. Please email <workshops...> to confirm your spot. For more info about the COA Workshops, please visit: https://www.ctbirding.org/birds-birding/workshops/\
\
Looking forward to seeing and birding with everyone!\

Subject: [CT Birds] BirdCast
Each Spring and Fall, I like to remind CT Birders about the BirdCast website.

BirdCast is a great way to check for active bird migration and help you decide when to go birding.

As its name implies, BirdCast can be used to predict when birds will be moving. Those predictions are shown on the main page: https://birdcast.info/

BirdCast also provides live radar showing bird movement. You can see the action here: https://birdcast.info/migration-tools/live-migration-maps/

The migration dashboard is another great tool. It shows detailed information about the number of birds moving, plus their altitude, direction and speed. Here is the dashboard for Connecticut: https://dashboard.birdcast.info/region/US-CT

The recent weather has blocked many birds from migrating into our region, but today the wind shifted and it looks like the birds are on the move!
