Greetings CT Birders and welcome to September. It’s time to study our ‘confusing fall warblers’ and get out and bird…!!

CT Birds guidelines:

This list is for sharing information about birds and birding in Connecticut.

When reporting birds, please include the town where seen.

*** Always include your first and last name and your town when posting. ***

Some birds should not be posted for the good of the bird. Examples are directions to accessible bird nests and any day-roosting owls - Screech, Great Horned, Barred, Barn, Long-eared and Saw-whet.

Proper language is expected, personal disagreements should be handled off-line and disruptive posts will not be tolerated.

Did you know?
• Attachments such as photos are not supported by the software.
• Prompt reporting of 'good' birds is appreciated by many in the birding community!
• When you want to post a reply to the list using email, use 'Reply to All'. <— please reply to all only when your reply benefits most of the list!
• When you want to reply only to the person who posted using email, use 'Reply'.
• You can automatically include your name and town with your email settings. Contact me if you need help setting this up.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know!

I would not normally report a Scarlet Tanager on this date but this morning at Northwest Park Windsor I was delighted to observe a male Scarlet Tanager in full breeding plumage! Should have been well into non breeding plumage on this date.

Rick and Everyone –

The Eastern Screech owl is on the list of owls specifically restricted from posting here. I know Rick is only speaking about a bird calling, but the restriction applies to any owl reports on the restricted list (Screech, Great Horned, Barred, Barn, Long-eared and Saw-whet).

Also, PLEASE sign your posts with your first AND last name (and your town). That is our rule and it should not be hard to comply with.

Subject: [CT Birds] Q?: id'ing White Ibis in Stratford?
Question:  at the Access Road ponds, in Stratford, one of the spots where the White Ibis has been seen ...
I saw today a brief flyover of an Ibis, with what seemed a white streak along the underwing, and what seemed to be generally lighter underneath.
From what I can see, other possible Ibis would clearly be dark underneath.
Is a white stripe (I think with dark border) sufficiently diagnostic for White Ibis there?

Beautiful day on the marsh, watching the shorebirds gathering. Several
visitors who were very curious about our migrating ospreys.
On the marsh: 5 D.C. Cormorants (1 with wings spread-drying off in the
sun), 2 Snowy Egrets, 14 Great egrets clustered together further out in the
marsh, 15 Black bellied plovers foraging in the mud, 1 Willet and 3 ospreys
coasting over. Several "peeps" further out that I couldn't identify.
On the grounds: 4 Mourning doves, 4 Northern Cardinals, 2 Carolina wrens,
4 House finches, 2 American Goldfinches, 1 Common yellowthroat in the
bushes, 1 Catbird in the birdbath, 9 House sparrows, and Merlin identified
an Eastern Kingbird.
Full report on Ebird.

I had an early Lincoln's Sparrow this morning at the Farmington Meadows
area, specifically at a Farmington Land Trust property, the Cowles Tract.
I'm sure I wasn't the only one watching the weather who saw today as prime
time for some passerine migration. Actually Lincoln's is a typically early
migrant as sparrows go. While October is prime sparrow time, Lincoln's are
always on the move by mid-September at least. So this isn't unheard of.

Birds today after yesterday's storms:  in a small lilac bush outside my computer window, all at the same time (truly!) - a female American redstart in perfect plumage, presumably young; yellow-throated vireo (here all summer); house wren (gone since July 31), Carolina wren (in molt) and an immature chipping sparrow.  I was woken at 4 am today by a barred owl calling incessantly.  And yesterday evening a Baltimore Oriole came through, as did a Louisiana waterthrush (normally nests here along my stream but absent this summer).
A worm-eating warbler was also here on August 7, feeding in a rhododendron bush, also migrating. Also reporting the departure of red-winged blackbirds and cowbirds which frequented my feeders until the end of July.  One male common grackle still visits.

Similar to Paul’s sighting, this morning at Bauer Farm in Madison I found an American Redstart, which was a surprise for this location in mid August.

More surprising was that a Canada Warbler was apparently traveling with the Redstart - this is probably 2 to 3 weeks early for this southern New Haven county location. I got some photos of the Canada Warbler and attached them to my checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S267189565

Marianne and Chris's Fork-Tailed Flycatcher continues at Maltby! Some of us enjoyed watching it today (around 11am) hawk and catch insects from a couple differet snags in what Julien calls "the hot corner"between Lakes 1 & 2<https://scrcog.org/wp-content/uploads/trails/RWA/alt/RecTrails_RWA7_Alt_6-2-16.pdf>.

It's missing one tail feather. So, more of a Spork-Tailed Flycatcher?

As noted, the RWA properties are 1. Fabulous habitats and 2. Permit-only. They are inexpensive and super useful: https://www.rwater.com/about-us/in-the-community/recreation/

Don't forget to close the gates and lock them when you drive in and out.

Thanks to everyone who's been sharing this bird! It seems it's here for the day at least, if not more.

This evening on Facebook, Octavian Henegariu reported the following:

“I biked home from work this evening (New Haven to Hamden, CT). I usually cross the Waite Street bridge by Lake Whitney in Hamden. This evening, I noticed a bird with a white head perched in a tree South of my location on that bridge.
..

“Took a few pictures with my Nikon P1000 and confirmed it was an Anhinga.
..

“In June of this year, I spotted another Anhinga in precisely the same location, drawing the attention of local birding enthusiasts.
Below is a picture I took this evening and a map with the location. The tip of the pink arrow marks the approximate location of the bird.”

.. his map shows the bird below the bridge, on the right side.

Subject: [CT Birds] Hammo Whimbrels, Godwit
I haven’t seen anything posted here so I wanted to share: A few days ago a small group of Whimbrels showed up at Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison. For the last couple of days, the birds have been in the marsh west of the camp store. And this morning, Dean Irwin found a Marbled Godwit loosely associating with the Whimbrel group.

Please note: This time of year, you cannot park in the parking area closest to the campground entrance. The best bet is to park in the west end fields near the septic field then walk towards the playground. Follow the paved road left (to your west) and the next road on your left past the playground is the road that leads to the camp store. Alternatively, you can walk south to the beach and then take the path to the camp store from the water.

The Godwit seems to be hanging around near the bridge with the memorial bench, but it has also been seen from the nearby restroom area looking west towards the marsh. This is roughly the same area where a Marbled Godwit has been seen in previous years.

Paul,
I had the same experience on the Salmon River in Machimoodus SP this morning, 10 purple martins. I walk my dogs here regularly and usually see them one or two days a year in late summer.
Yesterday I had 15 tree swallows feeding above my yard for 15 minutes, all summer I’ve occasionally seen 1 or 2, so the swallows are starting to congregate.
