This is typically when a bird of prey haunches over with its wings outpread over some prey most typically to protect it until they consume it. I've yet to go on my front yard but I'm hoping to see an impression of the wings in the snow. I've seen it with Cooper's Hawk's and Red tails before.

A small flock of at least nine Cedar Waxwings is feeding in my Cheshire yard. What a classy looking bird! The tree is some sort of crabapple that produces prodigious amounts of small, hard fruit; usually still on the tree come spring. I've always hoped it would attract birds, but this is the first time I'm seeing that. A Robin has been harassing them without much effect.

Just a heads up I found an adult Kamchatka Gull in the parking lot of Steamboat Dock Park, Verplanck, Westchester Co., NY. It was there for about 10 minutes and then went to the ice on the beach whenever cars came in. Evidentily others couldn't find it later in the afternoon or evening. Some are saying it's the same one that's been in Stamford for several years.

This afternoon Joan Smyth found two adult male Harlequin ducks at Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison. The birds were swimming and feeding at the tip of the jetty at Meig’s Point, near the large rocks.
Being fairly far out, a scope was required to identify them. I wondered whether these might be the same two birds that visited Hammonasset near the end of March last year.
Hopefully they will stick around and others will get to enjoy them!
A bonus male Northern Pintail was swimming closer to shore, providing another beautiful duck to observe on this chilly afternoon.

Good day!
The Connecticut Ornithological Association is proud to be a part of and to have the support of an amazing birding community. We invite you to join us for our 42nd Annual Meeting held on March 7, 2026 on UConn's Avery Point Campus in Groton, CT to meet and mingle with other local birders, explore our Exhibitors area, and hear from some amazing presenters.
We're thrilled to be joined by Amar Ayyash, Holly Merker, and one of our own local experts, Nick Bonomo as our presenters. This is truly an event you won't want to miss.
The Annual Meeting would not be possible if not for the continued support of our Community Sponsors. So we wanted to give a big shout out and thank you to the Hartford Audubon Society, Litchfield Hills Audubon Society, New Haven Bird Club, and Western Connecticut Bird Club! We encourage our members to check out each of these clubs - they offer birding outings, educational presentations, and more.
The 42nd Annual Meeting is open to all, but registration ends February 25th. We'd love to see you there!

There used to be an area a few score yards south of the fishing dock in
Stonington where access to the harbor for birding and sealing and running
tino skinks and other activities can be done. Parking may be available
there.
Does anyone know if the little honor fish hut run by the Bomster family at
the town dock is still in operation?

Greetings!
We're a little under a month away from the Connecticut Ornithological Association's 42nd Annual Meeting held on March 7, 2026. This year the event will be held on UConn's beautiful Avery Point Campus in Groton, CT from 9am - 4pm.
Unfortunately, we were unable to return to Middlesex for our 2026 event due to scheduling conflicts with the school. But we are confident this year's event will be worth the extra travel time. And we're hoping to be back in central Connecticut for our 2027 event!
This year we're excited to be joined by both new and returning Community Sponsors including the American Birding Association, Blue Aster Studio, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Sound Federal Credit Union, and Vortex Optics.
Their support of the Annual Meeting allows us to continually offer services to our Connecticut Birding Community such as the CT Listserv, our informational and educational Workshops, the state-wide birding Events Calendar, our Mini-Grant program, and more. Our sponsors make a direct impact and we invite you to visit their websites to learn more!
The 42nd Annual Meeting is open to all, but registration ends February 25th. We'd love to see you there!

Date: 2/9/26 1:11 pm From: Ann Thomas via CTBirds <ctbirds...> Subject: [CT Birds] FINAL REMINDER: Hartford Audubon Society mini-grant applications due FEBRUARY 15, 2026
Dear Friends,
*Please help us spread the word about this funding opportunity! THANK YOU!!*
The Mini-Grant Program helps to fulfill HAS's mission by funding (up to $2,000 per project) and supporting initiatives which directly benefit the bird life within the State of Connecticut, and especially within Hartford County. We hope to awaken a wider public interest in the enjoyment, preservation, and protection of birds and their habitat.
All projects must demonstrate some benefit to birds and/or birding in Connecticut. Past awards have included raptor enclosures, window strike material demonstrations, relevant educational publications, and bird habitat plantings.
Applications are due by *5:00pm on February 15, 2026.* The guidelines and application form are available on the HAS website at Hartford Audubon Society Mini-Grants Program <https://www.hartfordaudubon.org/activities/hartford-audubon-society-mini-grants/>. Applications should be mailed to <info...> with "Mini-Grant application" in the subject line.
This year we are especially interested in supporting projects that would benefit the City of Hartford. This is not a requirement, however.
Please email me if you have questions.
Ann Thomas <annthomas...> Hartford Audubon Society Mini-Grant Co-Coordinator
-- *The Hartford Audubon Society was founded in 1909 as a non-profit organization. The purpose of the Society is to foster and promote public interest in conservation of our wildlife and other natural resources, and the study and protection of birds. HAS owns and maintains several wildlife sanctuaries, offers numerous public bird walks throughout the year, and holds regular meetings and educational programs. Please visit our website at **www.hartfordaudubon.org <http://www.hartfordaudubon.org/>** for more information.*

I have all my windows and doors coated on the outside with CollidEscape. That has dramatically cut down on bird collisions. An added benefit is the birds can't see me, so I can get very close to feeders hanging outside windows. Also people outside can't see in my windows. It may cut down on energy costs too.

My Carolina wren showed up again today, much relief - I say "my" as its behavior was in keeping - straight to the suet then peanut log. Maybe they go into a deep torpor during the really cold times and reemerge when it hits 20?Again today, several grackles, red-winged blackbirds, cowbirds and starlings, aqain mostly males, but also: at least 1 female Bluebird, and 5 robins drinking in the stream (where it is open). Yea!

The paracord is heavy enough that it won't blow around too much, but creates enough of a physical "obstacle" to the bird to make them not think it's a clear opening. Something dark like black or dark brown blends in nicely and doesn't look weird.

I can’t stress enough how happy I was with Feather Friendly. It’s an affordable product comes in rolls like tape and has tiny square reflective stickers that birds can see. You have to apply from outside of window. Yes, you can see them on the window but the trade off was worth it and my experience was incredible.
We used to live in a house with large bay windows overlooking the water and lots of trees and shrubs. I used to hear birds hit that window at least once a day especially if I was putting bird seed out or if a hawk was around and chasing them. I buried more than one that likely suffered head and neck trauma from the collisions.
However, In the 3 plus years that followed me applying the stickers, I went from at minimum daily strikes, to only one in 3 years! And that was due to a hawk chasing a bird who likely flew into it in a panic.
I’m always glad to hear when people are looking to find ways to address this. I believe the website is simply: Featherfriendly.com
Pretty sure you can also purchase from Amazon . As I recall it was about $25 for a roll or 2? It’s been a few years so not certain but was money very well spent. The stickers adhered the whole time and I never had any problems with them.

I have scheduled four Bird walks at CT Audubon’s Milford Coastal Center over the next 6 weeks. These will be weather-permitting, and there is a nominal fee to attend. We’ll look for waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, larks and buntings. For dates, information, and to register, check out the website.

Sunday Feb 8th – I have male & female Carolina wrens who have been nesting over a doorway in my neighbor’s breezeway for the last 4 years. They come to my hopper feeder and suet feeder often (usually one at a time), and especially this winter in these temps and snow conditions. They both seem to prefer the Nutty nut cakes I purchase from the Fat Robin Nature store and hopefully I will continue to keep the cycle going. FYI - I never have seen any of their fledglings like I do with our spring/summer House Wren residents. We love wrens!

Saturday, Feb 7: One carolina wren eating at my suet feeder. When it is this cold, they need shelter and I'm lucky to have an area under my back porch covered with lattice. I know that many birds go under there at night for shelter or even during the day to avoid predators and stay warm. I've seen juncos, sparrows, carolina wrens, and more flying in and out of the lattice openings. With the high snow shelf covering much of the lattice, it must be pretty cozy in there. I often have possums, skunks, and raccoons in there, too.The larger animals can sneak in through an opening next to the steps.
Amusingly, the lattice-covered area under my larger front porch has an inward-swinging section for access, and that has clearly been being opened by something larger... at one time I think it was a bear, and now something smaller. I can't see well enough under the porch to see, and not sure I really want to... Whatever is in there is not bothering me!

The Indigo Bunting that first showed up at my feeders on Friday visited regularly yesterday and survived the bitter cold last night! I was so glad to see him since the temperature was 1° this morning. What a hardy bird!!
Looking at eBird, he is the northernmost Indigo Bunting reported so far this year. I wonder whether he is an extremely early migrating bird, or whether has he been overwintering in our region and was pushed down to the coast by the extreme cold?
I looked at photos of the bird seen in Greenwich last month and I don’t think my bird is the same individual. Photos of the bird are in my eBird reports for those wanting to check him out!
Anyone have any knowledge of Indigo Bunting migration patterns or vagrancy?

One Carolina Wren here every day, sometimes 2 back in January, and a female yellow-bellied sapsucker - feeding together, adjacent, the wren on suet or seed, the sapsucker on a tube of peanuts. Until today - sadly only the sapsucker - and she stuck to "her" feeding station even when a large flock of assorted blackbirds descended on my feeders, about squabbling 50 birds, mostly common grackles, some red-winged blackbirds, a few cowbirds and starlings. I logged 21 species at the feeders today in the snow, wind and cold, but nothing unusual beyond the blackbirds. Yesterday 3 bluebirds passed through.

I contacted Swarovski. Unfortunately they no longer offer this service; it’s only for repairs. You spend $3+k on binos, you would expect some perks. I was looking to purchase another pair for traveling; I think I’ll go with Vortex this time.

Date: 2/6/26 5:33 am From: Chuck Imbergamo via CTBirds <ctbirds...> Subject: [CT Birds] Feeder watching
With the ongoing bitter cold and snow cover, getting out to actively bird has been difficult at best. This leaves most of us with watching our feeders as the only practical way to enjoy the birds lately. They are under incredible pressure to survive right now, and I have been making an extra effort to keep my feeders filled this winter.
Other than the usual year-round locals, White-throats and Juncos, I’ve had many visits from Purple Finches, Eastern Bluebirds eating suet, and an American Tree Sparrow, visiting under the feeders for about a week now. Yesterday afternoon was extra special however, because a rather haggard-looking Indigo Bunting showed up. I’ve had them at my property a few times over the years (but always in spring) and I was quite surprised to see this winter rarity!
For my tube feeder mounted on a platform, I use a mix of sunflower hearts and ‘Backyard Basics’ birdseed that includes millet and cracked corn. The Bunting was really enjoying the millet, and the birds that prefer sunflower do a great job of keeping a supply of it on the platform and ground. I also have a mesh thistle feeder which I fill with ‘Lizzie Mae’s Finch Favorite’ which is a blend of thistle and tiny sunflower heart chips. I can’t recommend this seed enough since it attracts numerous species besides the expected American Goldfinches, including nuthatches, my Carolina Wren pair and even Flickers! It also lasts quite a while, which is a bonus.
I highly recommend offering many types of seed to get the greatest variety of birds. I typically have over a dozen species at any given time. The Indigo Bunting was back again this morning and I will keep him well fed as long as he’s around.
Keep your feeders filled!

Last week a Canada Goose froze to the ice in New Haven Harbor next to the Pequonnock yacht club docks in front of the condos where it is very shallow. Its picked apart carcass is still there. This deep freeze is relentless. This part of the harbor has been frozen for weeks.
* This morning, 3 of the local swans have not moved from a spot in the ice by the same docks. How can I tell if they are in torpor or sleeping or keeping warm or in need of rescue? 2 of them lifted their heads briefly. It is 200 feet from shore and a bit closer to the docks but I am not a member there and can’t get closer than the shore. I cannot tell if I need to call for a rescue?
Yesterday, the Norwalk Fire Dept rescued a swan and saved it plus got some training in too. Is there anyone in the New Haven area that can tell if these swans need rescue by the fire dept or if I am overreacting because of the nearby frozen goose? There is no thaw expected for days. I first saw the swans 3 hours ago from my window and can still see them.

I was bringing wood into the house last week after the storm and exposed a bunch of webbed spider egg sacs on the pallet below the wood. Within minutes of finishing up, three Carolina Wrens were feeding on the egg sacs. They are pretty observant and resourceful birds.

We have a stand-alone garage, and for years have kept the window open a few inches and the side door open. During the winter at least one CAWR roosts in the garage and we usually have a pair nest in the bow of a canoe suspended upside down from the rafters (speaks to how frequently we use it!). Since the severe cold snap, I've only seen one CAWR at the feeders taking advantage of suet and mealworms. S/he looks pretty beefy!

Decades ago I read somewhere that wren species that overwinter in things like log piles, fallen timber, stonewalls, hollowed stumps and tree trunks can be buried by deep snow preventing escape thus causing large regional mortalities after a major snowfall event. If I recall correctly, this is especially true for Winter Wrens, but would assume it to be a factor across the genus in snow prone latitudes. I believe Winter Wren have been found to congregate in groups on cold nights in rotted out stumps increasing their chances for suffocation after big snow storms. On a cheerful note after that sad tale - the COA Annual Meeting is only a month away.

The Connecticut Ornithological Association (COA) is proud to once again offer an in-person Annual Meeting...our 42nd year! This year the event will be held on UConn's beautiful Avery Point Campus in Groton, CT on March 7, 2026 from 9am to 4pm. Unfortunately we were unable to return to Middlesex due to scheduling conflicts with the school. But we are confident this year's event will be worth the extra travel time.
One of our long-time COA supporters will once again be joining us as our Lead Sponsor...Sunrise Birding! Many of our Connecticut birders have joined Gina Nichol and her team for birding excursions around the world. If you are looking for a trip that will "reveal the splendor and diversity of the natural world", be sure to swing by their table in our Exhibitor Hall to chat with Gina Nichol and Steve Bird. Whether you're looking to travel here in the US or go somewhere international, Sunrise Birding has many different trips coming up for you to explore.
Visit their website - sunrisebirding.com for more info!
The Annual Meeting is open to COA Members and non-members, but registration ends February 25th. We'd love to see you there!

This year we are pleased to once again be joined by Zeiss as our Premier Sponsor. At the meeting, one of Zeiss's knowledgeable reps will be giving a short presentation on digiscoping. Visit the Zeiss website ( https://www.zeiss.com/photonics-and-optics/us/nature-observation.html) and come see them at our Exhibitor Hall during the event.
Events like our Annual Meting make it possible for us to offer valuable services to our Connecticut birding community such as the CTListserv, our informational and educational Workshops, the state-wide birding events calendar on the website, our Mini-Grants which provide direct support to birds and their habitats within the state, and more. And we could not do it without the support from our sponsors.
The Annual Meeting is open to COA Members and non-members, but registration ends February 25th. We'd love to see you there!
For more information on the event, our speaker lineup, Sponsors, and Exhibitors, visit our website: ctbirding.org/annual-meeting

We were driving home to Harwinton this evening, north on Rte 8, north side of Waterbury, saw dozens of crows flying in to trees on east side of Rte 8 at about 4:15 PM. On the map, they were at this pin 41.590472,-73.058879 in the trees west side of Naugatuck River between Huntingdon Ave going up to Commons Court. You might get a closer look from Chase River Rd to see if that's the roost area, or staging to another site for the night?
I've seen them roost much closer to the Mixmaster/I-84 stack & near Riverside St in the past, but not for a long while.

Thank you to all who participated in the BIG JANUARY event for COA.
Remember: If you use eBird to submit all of your observations, there is no need to supply them directly to us unless you want to manually report your count for a single city/town. Our Big January team will pull the data from eBird.
Please email <coa-info...> to let us know if you are in one of the youth categories. If you do not use eBird, please keep a record of where and when you first observed each species throughout the month and forward the total results to our team at <coa-info...> Please note, the deadline for manual reports is February 2, 2026.
All those who reached 100 species or more will be emailed a commemorative certificate. The individuals with the highest count in the state, per county and in one location will also win a prize.
Congratulations to all who got out and contributed to this documentation of winter bird life in Connecticut.
Good Birding!

I went on a crow quest on Tuesday and Friday after work. On Tuesday at about 4:40pm, I found two concentrations of crows. There was >600 along Chase Parkway just west of the Naugatuck Valley Community College. All American Crows (I had my windows rolled down and didn’t hear any Fish Crows). I also found a group of >200 along Park Rd where it is interested on Welton Brook. At about 5:10pm the group along Chase Parkway took off heading Northeast.
On Friday, I went to the spot on Park Rd first. No birds, but I ended up finding a group of >500 American Crow (counted by tens, windows rolled down) in the trees around the intersection of Park Rd and W Main Street. The birds would occasionally take flight and then settle further east. I followed them down Fern Circe and then found a large group congregated in the trees behind the medical complex at the intersection of W Main and Grandview. Likely many of the same birds, I estimated >1000 American Crow. When I left at about 5:15pm, they seemed to be congregating around Waterbird Hospital, which I think someone mentioned as a roosting location in the past.

Back in the 1980’s i would see a steady stream of crows heading north at the top of Cheshire Hill on I-84 while commuting home in the evening from Hartford. I assumed they were heading to the roost site in north Waterbury and coming from the shore and landfills still open down that way.

I often see dozens + of crows flying in late afternoon from farm fields in Southbury toward the direction of Waterbury. Don’t know if this observation is related to the Waterbury crow roost. I would think to get that many crows at the roost site they must be flying in from a good distance.

Continuing this very interesting topic on Crows in Connecticut.
Yesterday, Saturday January 24th, while driving through Waterbury on
Route 8 at approximately 5PM, my wife Jo and I could see hundreds of
Crows in the sky. A conservative estimate would be 300. But it could
have been upwards of 500.
It would be interesting at some point to set up a viewing with
binoculars a/o scopes one day to try and get a better viewing of
exactly where they’re coming from and also if the flock is just one
(American Crow?) species.

The history of winter crow roosts in Connecticut is fascinating.
Connecticut Birds (Zeranski & Baptist 1990) cites an article
published in Bird-Lore in 1933 that listed winter crow roosts in
five
Connecticut counties, the largest roost being in Hartford of 50,000
birds and indicated that that roost was "known to exist for at least
100 years". Believing that crows were significant predators of eggs
and young of waterfowl, song and insectivorous birds, the
Connecticut
Board of Fisheries and Game embarked on a campaign in the winter of
1932-33 to eradicate crows at their winter roosts and approximately
1,000 birds were shot that winter before the effort was abandoned.
The crows simply dispersed to form new roosts, "thus outrunning the
men performing the killing."

I have been watching some of the talk about a Waterbury crow roost. I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it already, but we have a beautiful roost here in Danbury that I've observed for years! They stream into the downtown area around dusk and often settle near Main Street/Exit 5 area or the downtown campus of Western CT State University. Sometimes a large group will hang out in the trees on my property in Danbury before they head to the official roost site. Always a comforting winter sight to see.
