Greetings bird enthusiasts,
Warble Bird Songs, an ear-birding app, is requesting your help. Our small
team is looking for beta testers to try out this nearly completed app and
provide feedback. Tired of automatic app-generated identifications? Ever
struggled with terminology to describe a sound? Warble Bird Songs will
help! It builds ear-birding skills by developing your pattern recognition
skills. It contains tutorials and provides a new and interactive approach
to learning bird sound.
Warble Bird Songs contains accessibility features that make it an effective
tool for blind and visually impaired users to learn ear-birding. In fact,
that is the primary goal of the app. Yet sighted users will find it useful
without even realizing these underlying features.
We’re a not-for-profit endeavor. Please help us improve the app that will
allow the blind and sighted to become better ear-birders independently. All
skill levels from beginner to advanced are welcomed. For more information
or to sign up as a beta-tester, please visit
https://warblebirdsongs.wixsite.com/warble-bird-songs
Thank you and happy spring birding!

Today while monitoring the 14 Eastern Bluebird boxes I have around the meadow at Allen’s, I was stunned to hear PUMA singing. Sure enough a pair of birds was checking out one of the boxes- they won’t nest with that setup but the irony was marked.

Merci pour l'info. C'est intéressant de voir comment le Vermont gère ces

doubtful with our hummingbirds (Ruby-throated) which prefer a nest site near the drooping end of a tree limb, ideally over somewhat open forest floor and near or over water. Some hummingbird species do nest in rock crevices and niches, but not here.

I've waited 10 years for a phoebe to nest in the yard and they finally did. Problem is we're getting a roof replaced today so they have been forced off the nest. I think they completed the clutch a few days ago. Anyone have any idea if the eggs will survive if they aren't incubated all day? I'm hoping the crew is done before too late and the birds will return after such commotion for such a long time.

We have a couple vocal pairs of great crested flycatchers near Windsor locks Canal state park. Much fewer bug eaters overall. Each spring a specific flying insect emerges on time for chimney swifts and swallows. This year we had noticeably fewer number of swifts and swallows; also noticeable by the increase in length of time the bugs have been clinging to the screens and getting inside. I believe they’re called shad flies known for being a food source when the shad fish are running. Perhaps all the railroad station construction has kept the birds away?

Hello again –
I need to clarify something: The issue only involves whether you receive CT Birds emails.
If you suddenly began receiving emails and did not previously, I can fix that.
No other settings (digest or not) were changed.

Merlin insisted there was a wormeating warbler in the deeper woods. I’m not really counting it as it’s song is like so many others but I’m hoping that’s what it was! Now I need to actually see one.

Carolina wrens
I've noticed the same thing about the Carolina Wren. I don't hear any in the neighborhood and I've had them here for years. This spring before nesting season started, I found an abandoned Carolina nest with five eggs so, they disappeared last summer. I was wondering if others had noticed a decline. Thank you, Paul and Sarah for bringing the subject up.i really miss them!
For the last few years I had a pair of Carolina wrens in my yard. They were still here during the winter, but one didn't seem to survive the second cold snap, and the other one disappeared a short time later. No sign of any Carolina wrens since then.

Hamden/Cheshire line yard. Bummer on the Carolina Wren numbers. Happy to say we still have ours and they have fledged the first batch in our barn about a week ago. Almost stepped on one young one in my shop out there and then heard the chicks peeping from all over. That's when I abandon my shop for a couple days to let them clear out. Adults still going in and out getting ready to start again. Usually 3 batches.

I found my local Carolina wrench flightless after a large snow this winter,
and caught it and brought it to a rehabber. While I was there, the rehabber

Date: 5/17/26 3:50 pm From: Adam Fasciolo via CTBirds <ctbirds...> Subject: [CT Birds] Re: CTBirds Digest, Vol 6849, Issue 1
We live further south (I think) than any of the previous responders. And fortunately, our Carolina Wren pair survived the winter and have been busy in our yard all spring. It’s probably due to location. But we also have a raised shed (about 1 foot) in the back of our property, which has a gravel bed under it and butts up against the stone wall where I believe they nest. That could have given them additional shelter and access to our feeders this winter.
It’s a shame that their numbers are down overall. And I’m not sure if they were affected worse in more northern states or (hopefully) less so in places further south than Connecticut.

At least one Grasshopper Sparrow has returned to Roberts Field in Bristol. I was there yesterday afternoon and thought I heard the soft buzzy trill of the sparrows, and Merlin picked up on it as well. Because there were distant blue wing warblers calling as well, I wanted to listen to the recordings first and make sure it wasn’t a mis-identification. Sure enough, it was there. Hopefully, there’s a pair and they’ll have a successful nesting season.

We lost our local pair of wrens with the second cold snap this winter, too. It surprised us as they seemed to be doing well until then and we had food out for them (suet and peanuts) at all times. We’ve noticed fewer Carolina Wrens wherever we’ve gone birding in CT this spring. The first objective measure of their apparent population decline will come next month with the summer bird counts. It seems likely that their numbers will be down by at least 50%. The good news is that this has happened before and they have recovered quickly and well after previous super cold winters.

I’ve seen Carolina Wrens near the Windsor Locks Canal Park. I usually bird around the grounds right before entering the park on Windsor Locks side, between the river and canal. There’s been at least one or two there regularly and saw one yesterday.

For the last few years I had a pair of Carolina wrens in my yard. They were still here during the winter, but one didn't seem to survive the second cold snap, and the other one disappeared a short time later. No sign of any Carolina wrens since then.

Arriving at East Granby Middle School this morning, I got nine species in just 5 minutes from the parking lot, starting with two very vocal Baltimore orioles, a black-throated green warbler, a black and white warbler, a chipping sparrow, and more. Nice way to start the day!
