I've seen the Indigo Bunting numerous times each day since his reappearance on Sunday, and yesterday something new happened – he started singing!

I doubt that my yard is suitable habitat for nesting, and I'll bet that he is just tuning up for future singing at his breeding grounds. But who knows – maybe he will stick around....

Whatever the case, his extended visit just keeps getting better and better!

At Selleck's Woods in Darien this morning, a singing, sunlit male just where the main path emerges from the woods into the railroad/powerline cut. Seen with Bill Van Loan. After parting ways, I saw another (or possibly the same bird) a little further down the cut. Noting it here because ebird didn't even have it listed yet.

Alas, I used to do the Purdys, NY, BBS route (northern Westchester county just across the CT birder), but my 74-year-old body does not like getting up early enough to start at 4:49 AM, so I retired a couple of years ago. However, I will say that running a BBS route was very satisfying. I would encourage any of you to take over one of these routes. It is fun and adds to citizen science. If I were younger I might volunteer for the Greenwich or Danbury route.

Subject: [CT Birds] Volunteers needed for North American Breeding Bird Survey Routes

As state coordinator for the BBS, I am responsible for identifying
volunteers to fill open BBS routes in CT. For anyone unfamiliar with
this federal program, the BBS is a long-term, large-scale,
international avian monitoring program initiated in 1966 to track the
status and trends of North American bird populations.
There are 16 routes in CT, each 25 miles long with observation points
every half mile (50 stops). We currently have SEVEN routes in need of
observers:
1. Buckingham (starting point in Glastonbury)
2. Willimantic (starting point in Chaplin)
3. Sherman
4. Greenwich
5. Danbury (starting point in Ridgefield)
6. Long Hill (starting point in Easton)
7. New Hartford (starting point in Burlington)
During the month of June, observers conduct 3-minute point surveys at
each of the 50 stops on a route, which are at pre-defined locations.
All surveys start at 4:45 AM and generally take about 5 hours. For new
volunteers there is a brief online training module that must be
completed, and observers must be able to confidently identify all
expected species by sight and sound.
Please contact me at [1]<amdasinger...> if interested. The data
collected are critical in tracking long term bird population trends!

Wonderful experience, Chuck. He looks so beautiful in your eBird
pictures. I remember that Chris and Marianne had one stay all winter a few
years ago. Maybe the wintering over of first year birds is more usual than
we would think.

In case anyone is interested, spotted about 50 ibises in their usual marshes at the intersection of Route 1 and the Hammonasset River. If the white-faced was among them, could not tell, as they were fairly distant, then lifted and dropped down behind the river bank, out of sight. But nice to see they are returning in some numbers.

I last saw him at around 2:30 in the afternoon, when he perched
briefly on

the nearby maple tree and flew over to the feeder but he immediately
hopped

back and did not feed from it. On some of the previous days' visits
he ate

voraciously and aggressively at the feeder and he definitely seemed
more

listless over the last several days. Now I know that he was getting
ready

to move back to his breeding grounds.

I was so fortunate to see this beautiful bird each and every day for
60

days. I got to see him transition from his tattered looking
non-breeding

plumage into nearly full breeding plumage. It's amazing when you
realize

that birds are individuals, struggling through their daily lives,
and I was

happy to support him through some bitter cold and even snow storms.
I never

let the feeder go empty and was rewarded with his visits – He
brightened a

very cold winter.

I will miss him!

Prologue: I will be checking eBird reports of Indigo Buntings with
photos

going forward – 'Indy' had a very yellow lower mandible which was
visible

even at a distance. I thought this would change as he came into
breeding

plumage but it did not. I hope that if anyone gets photos of an
Indigo

Bunting with this feature they will let me know; it might turn out
to be

him. I hope perhaps next winter he will come back and visit again.

Jim touched so many lives through his knowledge, curiosity, and deep love
of the natural world, and it feels only right to gather outside, where he
felt most at home.

Please come as you are and bring memories and a story to share. Please note that the park closes at dusk and there is plenty of parking. We hope to see you there.

Hello Nancy -

Checking on eBird, there have been Woodcocks seen at the Jared Eliot Preserve as recently as March 30th: https://ebird.org/hotspot/L1405392/bird-list

Perhaps someone who visits the preserve regularly has been there more recently and can share whether they are still displaying.

American Woodcock breed around us and are present year-round to some degree, but the best time to observe them is when they are doing their mating displays which typically peak in March. Checking any areas with open fields, especially near damp woods or brushy areas, is probably still worthwhile.

Hello Arthur –

A fairly consistent place for Woodcocks is the Frederick White farm in Durham also known as the Durham Fairgrounds.

You can drive down the gravel road and park along the fields just downhill from Maple Avenue. On warm evenings near dusk, particularly in March, you can get quite a show!

I mentioned this to another birder last weekend and according to eBird he visited that night and observed Woodcocks plus a bonus Wilson's Snipe.

The most numerous Purple Finches we have had at our yard. Probably 6 to8, seen at 6:30 AM until feeder is removed at 9:30. We have to take the hanging feeder down by 9:30 so bears don't take it down, which they have already done once this year when we left it out too long. Males and females finches eating sunflower seeds. They usually stay only a day or two and then I assume they journey north.

Drove past 3 turkey vultures walking around in Broadbrook. Also, observed an Osprey; either considering the site for a nest or already in process of building - I couldn’t see into it to tell when it perched atop the cell tower at Windsor Locks Amtrak station. I believe they’ve used that site in the past.

Subject: [CT Birds] COA (Zoom) Workshop 4/16 - Intro to ARCC
Hello All!

It's starting to feel like spring has officially sprung in Connecticut!
We're already receiving reports of warblers and birds we often associate
with warmer weather.

The COA Workshop Committee is excited to present a new educational
presentation. We invite you to join us on Zoom on April 16th at 6:30pm to
learn more about the Avian Records Committee of Connecticut (ARCC). ARCC is
one of the COA's biggest contributions to avian research and local
knowledge.

The presentation will be led by Frank Mantlik (ARCC Chair) and Phil Rusch
(ARCC Co-Secretary). The workshop will focus on the purpose and function of
ARCC, the efforts being led by ARCC Committee members to better understand
historical rare bird encounters, available resources, and how the
Connecticut birding community can contribute via Rare Bird Reports. We're
also excited to discuss some of Connecticut's exciting rare records.

The Workshop is free and open to the public, but you must register ahead of
time.

To register, please visit:

Egrets, 4 Tree Swallows, 2 Greater Yellowlegs.
Golden-crowned Kinglets, many Brown Creepers, Field Sparrow. 4 Wild
Turkeys, American Oystercatchers, still decent numbers of Long-tailed
Ducks, RB Mergansers, Brant and Buffleheads. Interesting behavior among 3
Ospreys on one nest by clambake marsh with a pair copulating and another
individual coming in with a fish. The Canada Geese that had been attempting
to nest on the Eagle Pond statue nest have been exiled to the clambake
parking area and the ospreys have reclaimed their nest.

The first ASY male or scout was observed flying overhead around 10:00 am
this morning at the Lake Waramaug Country Club Golf Course. Ironically
Marvelwood School's Avian Ambassadors Community Service team was erecting
a new gourd rack to replace the outdated housing when fellow faculty member
Caleb May asked, "Is that a Purple Martin circling above us with a few Tree
Swallows?"

I heard from another person on Jennings Road in Kent that they had about
five martins circling above them when they were putting their gourds up
this afternoon.

About a week early for the northwest corner of the state.

Welcome to April CT Birders. This month, things are going to get really good bird-wise. In addition to Mike DiGiorgio's early Palm Warbler, an early Louisiana Waterthrush showed up the other day in Ridgefield, and Pine Warblers are now being seen in numerous places...just the leading edge of the warbler push that many of us have been dreaming about through the winter.

So dust off your gear, charge your batteries and get ready to enjoy the spectacle of migration!

Do not do much birding and keeping bird lists these days so it always nice to pick up an unexpected "year" bird. Was at the Washington Food Market in Washington Depot, CT late this morning to pick up a Sunday newspaper.  A young women at one the registers noted some bird activity in the median of the parking area for the market. I turned around to note a Common Raven had flown down to pick up something in the median. The Raven flew off quickly followed by at least 2 American Crows who were not " happy" with the Raven being there.

Also, the Coastal Center will be bringing back the Return of the Osprey fundraising event on April 25. It will be a great evening of food, fun, and terrific raffle/auction items.

Dear friends,
We invite you to join us in celebrating the life of Jim Hunter on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 6:00 PM at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven. Together, we’ll take a walk, share stories, and honor a truly brilliant biologist, naturalist, birder, and friend.
Jim touched so many lives through his knowledge, curiosity, and deep love of the natural world, and it feels only right to gather outside, where he felt most at home.
Please come as you are and bring memories and a story to share. Please note that the park closes at dusk and there is plenty of parking. We hope to see you there.

Yes, sadly, the males are out and about, hungry.  Females are hopefully still in their dens with their young.  A very large male came the other day at 9:30 pm - I'd brought in all the feeders but one - of course he found it.

We woke up this morning to see our backyard feeder pole completely toppled and bent out of shape.  Doubt that a raccoon could do this, or even a bobcat.  Anybody else have apparent bear incidents in this area.
